Poetry Quarterly Submission Guidelines

Background

Poetry Quarterly has been publishing issues since 2010. Each issue features both new and established poets. We consider all forms of poetry, but we generally shy away from rhyme.

It's Still Free to Submit

Many excellent journals charge fees for either online or offline submissions (or both). We all understand those funds are needed to send contributors a copy, or otherwise generate income. More than 70% of journals today do not pay anything. These practices are understandable, but frustrating to writers.

Fortunately, PQ's general submissions are still free.

Publication Rewards

All journals have some financial strategy to stay afloat, and those decisions are often difficult trade-offs. What are ours?

Pros

  • We don't require writers to pay anything to submit.
  • We are in the minority of journals that do pay cash — via PayPal, because it's easy and convenient.
  • Along with publication, every published poet receives a one-year subscription to Poetry Quarterly online ($20 value).

Cons

  • We cannot afford to send free paperback copies.
  • Token payments are small.

Submission Terms

By submitting, you are acknowledging these terms.

  1. You confirm that you are at least 18 years of age. Submissions from anyone under 18 will not be considered.
  2. By submitting, you are asserting your work is available to print and has not been previously printed elsewhere. You maintain all future-use rights to your work.
  3. You affirm your submission is your own creation and no part of your submission is in the public domain.
  4. No AI-generated work. Your submission must be written by you. Work produced wholly or in part by AI tools, large language models, or generative writing services is not eligible and will be rejected without further review.
  5. You may submit up to 3 times per issue (or up to 6 times per issue if you are a patron). One poem per submission.
  6. Submissions in pending status can be instantly withdrawn from your account. Once accepted, please contact us to withdraw.
  7. Simultaneous submissions are welcome. Please withdraw your submission promptly if the work is accepted elsewhere.

Rights & Reprints

By accepting a submission for publication, Poetry Quarterly reserves the right to publish, reprint, anthologize, and otherwise exploit that work in perpetuity — and we share that right with the poet who wrote it. Poets may reprint, sell, license, or otherwise use their own work that we have published without the need to contact us first.

An acknowledgement that the work first appeared in Poetry Quarterly is customary and always appreciated.
